Archer Western - Hurricane Florence Railroad Repair Work

Location
Stella, North Carolina

Type
Railroad Construction

CWC’s Rail Division recently completed a major turnkey rail rehabilitation and construction project for Archer Western in Stella, NC, supporting the U.S. Marine Corps with essential infrastructure repairs following Hurricane Florence. This extensive effort involved the demolition of two railroad trestles totaling 2,650 track feet (TF), demolition of 3,800 feet of existing track for access to bridge sites, and the complete reconstruction of critical rail systems across multiple locations, including Queens Creek, White Oak, and a 34-mile stretch of MOW corridor.

At Queens Creek, crews removed and salvaged rail, bars, plates, and crossties, disposing of old bridge ties and reusing the existing track as guardrail. We installed new 115RE continuous welded rail (CWR), extending 19.5’ beyond each side of the new bridge structure, complete with destressing, closure welds, ballast, leveling, tamping, and lining.

At White Oak, a similar scope was completed with added complexity—track elevation was raised by two feet to meet the new bridge grade, requiring 1,475 feet of east approach and 750 feet of west approach build-up.

The MOW Corridor Work included replacement of 26,320 crossties across 34 miles of track, flash-butt welding of rail into CWR strings, installation of 43,870 TN of ballast stone, and full surface/line/dress of 28 miles of track. The project also featured embankment construction, sub-ballast installation, storm drain improvements, approximately 6,500 TF of new track installation across bridges and access points, and the installation of asphalt/rail seal grade crossings.

This project showcases CWC’s deep bench of expertise in rail system construction, bridge replacement, and long-distance track rehabilitation. Our team delivered high-quality results safely and efficiently under federal standards, reinforcing our reputation as a trusted partner in mission-critical rail infrastructure work.
