Port of Wilmington South Gate Improvements
Location
Wilmington, North Carolina
Type
Heavy Civil Infrastructure
Civil Works Contracting, in partnership with Barnhill Contracting Company, successfully completed the North Carolina State Port Authority – Port of Wilmington South Gate Improvements project. This heavy civil infrastructure project significantly upgraded the Port’s primary entrance, with work performed in a challenging coastal environment directly influenced by the nearby Cape Fear River.
CWC delivered a comprehensive, turn-key civil sitework package including erosion control, demolition of existing underground utilities and pavement, and grading of approximately 10,000 CY. Utility installations included over 2,000 LF of fire and domestic waterlines, 900 LF each of 2" force main via directional bore and open cut, and two new lift stations for sanitary sewer service.
Storm sewer construction featured more than 1,500 LF of RCP and slot drains, along with a 90,000-gallon underground stormwater retention and filtration system, encased in 2,000 tons of #57 stone. The project also included milling 30,000 SY of pavement, placement of over 13,000 tons of asphalt, and installation of 5,030 LF of jersey barriers, thermoplastic and painted pavement markings, and signage.
Due to the site's proximity to the Cape Fear River and low elevation, extensive dewatering systems were implemented throughout the project. Completed in Fall 2021, the South Gate Improvements have greatly enhanced the functionality, safety, and capacity of the Port of Wilmington.
