The Fort Fisher project marked the beginning of a successful partnership between CWC and Bordeaux Construction. Located at one of North Carolina’s most visited Civil War historic sites, the project was overseen by the NC State Construction Office and the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources. It represented a major investment in heritage preservation, replacing the outdated 1965-era museum and Underwater Archaeology building, both of which had long struggled to accommodate the site’s growing popularity, now exceeding one million visitors annually. 

The scope of work was both historically sensitive and technically demanding. Phase Two of the project focused on the careful reconstruction of the original earthwork fortifications, a vital aspect of Fort Fisher's legacy. This included building historically accurate earthworks, gun emplacements, a bombproof shelter, a sally port, and a lunette—all designed in accordance with archaeological and historical data to ensure authenticity.  

CWC executed a comprehensive package of site work that demonstrated its multidisciplinary capabilities. Services included clearing and grading, erosion control, import and export of fill, installation of storm drainage systems, and full utility infrastructure: potable water, sanitary sewer, and fire mains. Hardscape features included concrete flatwork, pervious pavers for environmental sustainability, asphalt pavement, as well as striping, markings, and site signage.  

The project has been celebrated for its excellence in both construction quality and historical integrity, earning multiple local awards and national recognition for its contribution to historic site development. Fort Fisher stands today not only as a preserved landmark but as a modernized, accessible experience for future generations, thanks in part to CWC’s craftsmanship and collaborative approach.
