National Gypsum's Gold Bond Project

Location
Wilmington, North Carolina

Type
Civil & Railroad Construction

Civil Works Contracting successfully delivered a multi-phase, turnkey civil and rail infrastructure project for Gold Bond Building Products in Wilmington, NC. The project transformed National Gypsum’s logistics capabilities by enabling efficient transloading of gypsum—shipped via ocean-going vessels on the Cape Fear River—directly into railcars for streamlined distribution to wallboard manufacturing facilities across the region.

The comprehensive scope required close coordination between the civil and rail divisions. CWC executed extensive site development, including 9 acres of clearing and grubbing, over 38,000 cubic yards of excavation and grading, and the installation of 1,600 linear feet of storm drainage infrastructure.

Stormwater management systems included RCP storm drains, infiltration basins, and large retention basins to meet environmental compliance standards. CWC also constructed 442 linear feet of cast-in-place retaining walls supported by 118 driven piles and installed domestic and fire water lines, sanitary sewer systems, and site-wide utility infrastructure.

Roadway improvements included asphalt paving and stone access roads, while rail construction featured continuous welded rail (CWR), sub-ballast installation, steel ties, and multiple turnouts—two #8, one #10, and fifteen steel tie turnouts—for optimal yard flexibility.

Supporting infrastructure included a compressed air system, overhead lighting for 24/7 operations, perimeter fencing, and vertical construction of a railcar repair building and welfare building.

This project stands as a model of integrated construction execution and long-term operational resilience, positioning National Gypsum for enhanced shipping efficiency and supply chain performance.
